Stepping Into Trust: When God Closes One Door, Trust Opens Another

Trust. So much of our lives rely on it.
We trust that the pilot will land the plane safely.
We trust that the people cooking our food will do so correctly.
We trust the bank with our money.
We trust the people around us to have our backs.
But when it comes to trusting God, we often struggle.
In 2016, I was called to serve as a missionary in Canada. During Bible college, I did my internship in Newfoundland, and I immediately fell in love—with the people, the culture, and the deep sense that this was where I was meant to be. I knew God was calling me to Canada. From that moment, Canada became my focus. My goal was to get there as quickly as possible.
At the end of 2019, I graduated from Bible college and immediately joined a mission-sending agency. Then COVID hit. Right from the start, there was a roadblock—Canada’s borders were closed, and for two years, I could do nothing but wait.
When the borders finally reopened, I jumped into fundraising, but no matter what I tried, there was always something blocking the way. One obstacle after another. I started to wonder—had God really called me there? Then, at the beginning of August this year, every door to Canada closed completely.
And that’s when my journey of trusting God truly began.
When the doors shut, I had no idea what to do. But God did. He opened up an opportunity for me to step into youth ministry and take over a youth group.
Trust has always been difficult for me—with both people and God. And this season has been no exception. But when He asked me to step into this role, I knew I was walking into a new season of trust.
It’s hard to trust when you don’t see what’s ahead.
That’s where I am right now—trusting Him for everything. My finances. The direction of this youth ministry. The right people to come alongside me.
Maybe you’re in a season where God is asking you to trust Him more than you’re used to.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
The key to trusting isn’t relying on your own knowledge. The key to trusting God is submitting to Him and His will. It’s about taking one step at a time and saying, “God, I don’t understand this, but I’m willing to do it Your way, and I know You will guide my steps.”
And when you take those baby steps—those small but faithful steps of trust—things will begin to fall into place. Blessings you never thought you were deserving of will be given to you.
Learning to trust God is pivotal to who we are as believers. And once the door to trust is opened, there is no path you will walk where God won’t give you the ability to take those steps of faith.
